For anyone who’s ever wished to, but had trouble starting, keeping, or finishing a journal or sketchbook comes Wreck This Journal, an illustrated book that features a subversive collection of prompts, asking readers to muster up their best mistake- and mess-making abilities to fill the pages of the book (and destroy them). Acclaimed illustrator Keri Smith encourages journalers to engage in “destructive” acts-poking holes through pages, adding photos and defacing them, painting with coffee, and more-in order to experience the true creative process. Readers discover a new way of art and journal making-and new ways to escape the fear of the blank page and fully engage in the creative process.

I really want this. It seems that you can have a lot of fun by “destroying” it.

ImageDescrierea cartii

“Zece…”

Cel putin asta mi s-a intamplat mie.

“First, there were ten – a curious assortment of strangers summoned as weekend guests to a private island off the coast of Devon. Their host, an eccentric millionaire unknown to all of them, is nowhere to be found. All that the guests have in common is a wicked past they’re unwilling to reveal – and a secret that will seal their fate. For each has been marked for murder. One by one they fall prey. Before the weekend is out, there will be none. And only the dead are above suspicion.”

My thoughts

This was the first Agatha Christie book that I had ever read and I absolutely loved it. Once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down until the end.

The story was written in a smart way, the characters were varied and credible and the suspense became more and more claustrophobic as I was getting closer to the end, a genius, completely unexpected, but very logical end.

The plot is based on a song with puerile, funny lyrics on the basis of which more and more shocking crimes are being committed:
Ten little Indian boys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were nine./Nine little Indian boys sat up very late; One overslept himself and then there were eight./Eight little Indian boys travelling in Devon; One said he’d stay there and then there were seven./Seven little Indian boys chopping up sticks; One chopped himself in halves and then there were six./Six little Indian boys playing with a hive; A bumblebee stung one and then there were five./Five little Indian boys going in for law; One got in Chancery and then there were four./Four little Indian boys going out to sea; A red herring swallowed one and then there were three./Three little Indian boys walking in the Zoo; A big bear hugged one and then there were two./Two little Indian boys sitting in the sun; One got frizzled up and then there was one./One little Indian boy left all alone; He went and hanged himself and then there were none.

Ten persons – Philip Lombard (ex-soldier), Vera Claythorne (ex-governess), General Macarthur, Emily Brent (“an elderly woman”), Doctor Armstrong, Tony Marston (a rich young man), William Blore (a retired police inspector), Thomas Roger and his wife (cooks) and the Judge Wargrave – are tricked into coming onto a deserted island, near Devon, by someone called U.N. Owen who knows each one’s past. They don’t know each other, the only thing that they have in common being the fact that each of them commited a murder without being punished. As soon as they arrive on the island, the game begins: ten, nine, eight…the characters die one after the other. Will anyone survive? Read and find out!

A Game Of Thrones/ Urzeala Tronurilor – George R.R. Martin (Review)

16 Sep

Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens.
Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

  My thoughts

I loved this book and I can’t wait to read A Clash of Kings.

It was confusing at first due to the large number of characters, but once you get used to them this book is    hard to put down. Although it has over 800 pages, A Game of Thrones is fast-paced so it won’t take that much time to be read.

The characters were very interesting, some of them not very likable, but all of them had many-layers and were very believable. Few are totally good or evil, most of them being in the “gray area” making some choices which weren’t that moral or honorable but you could understand why they had to do what they did. The characterizations were done very well and the author doesn’t care if a character is bad or good…they all have the same chance to die in some tragic and horrible way.

The story is told from the perspective of eight main characters and each of them have also their separate storyline. There was something which I didn’t like that much: Daenerys’s chapters. I just think that her role wasn’t that important in this first book (although I’m sure she will become a very important character in the next installments) and I felt that her story didn’t fully connect to the main plot.

The writing was good and it wasn’t pretentious which made the book easy to read. There are a lot of descriptions (places, people) but I think they were necessary.

I recommend this book to everyone, but mostly to the fantasy fans.
PS: It contains a lot of sex scenes and violence.

Descrierea cartii

Parerea mea

Va recomand aceasta carte, in special acelora care sunteti fani ai cartilor fantasy.
