The Replacement – Brenna Yovanoff (Review)

21 Sep

Mackie Doyle is not one of us. Though he lives in the small town of Gentry, he comes from a world of tunnels and black murky water, a world of living dead girls ruled by a little tattooed princess. He is a Replacement, left in the crib of a human baby sixteen years ago. Now, because of fatal allergies to iron, blood, and consecrated ground, Mackie is fighting to survive in the human world.

Mackie would give anything to live among us, to practice on his bass or spend time with his crush, Tate. But when Tate’s baby sister goes missing, Mackie is drawn irrevocably into the underworld of Gentry, known as Mayhem. He must face the dark creatures of the Slag Heaps and find his rightful place, in our world, or theirs.

My thoughts

I don’t know where to start. I loved the cover, I liked the description, I thought I was going to love the book. That wasn’t the case because I basically struggled to finish it.

I was happy that the story was told from a guy’s perspective and I really enjoyed the first 20 or so pages, but then the story started to go downhill for me, mainly because it was too slow. The atmosphere was dark and creepy but the story was also very confusing. The author didn’t explain very well what was happening in that city and what the main character was. The last part was the best part of the book because it contained some action but even that seemed a little forced.

The characters were dull and weren’t developed at all. I didn’t like any of them except for maybe Mackie’s friend (unfortunately I don’t remember his name) and Emma. I couldn’d stand the main character for a great amount of time, because he was so whiney, he was always complaining for different reasons and he acted in an awkward way. Plus, many of his choices made no sense at all. I didn’t like Tate either because she was constantly angry and she acted like a total stalker.

Overall, I really didn’t care for this book, even though there are many people who enjoyed it.
